MUSEUM FIELD TRIPS TO LACMA & THE GETTY CENTER SPRING 2023
This quarter we have two spectacular field trips planned. Our first field trip is to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the second field trip is to the Getty Center. There are simply too many important exhibitions between these two museums that are relevant to Art 1A, therefore we will have two field trips. These field trips are all day events, and they are in lieu of the lectures that week. Sections are scheduled as planned. If you are unable to go to the Getty Center or LACMA, there are alternative field trips for you to attend on campus at the UCSB AD&A Museum and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (details below).
A FEW TIPS TO PREPARE FOR OUR FIELD TRIPS:
FIELD TRIP #1: LACMA ON SATURDAY, MAY 13
FIELD TRIP #2: THE GETTY CENTER ON SATURDAY, JUNE 3
MANDATORY LIABILITY WAIVERS (PLEASE FILL OUT ALL OF THEM TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR ALL OF THE FIELD TRIPS):
Students must submit the liability waiver form for each trip, and will not receive free admission without them. If you show up to the museum without having done this, you will have to pay full admission and you will not legally be recognized as part of the UCSB Department of Art field trip. If you have difficulty filling out your DocuSign Liability Waiver, then email your professor and our Undergraduate Advisor, Catherine Jenks: arts-undergraduate@ucsb.edu.
- Fill out the LACMA field trip (on Saturday, May 13) Liability Waiver: LACMA ART 1A Waiver
- Fill out the alternative museum trip (to LACMA) Liability Waiver: SBMA and AD&A: SBMA & AD&A ART 1A Waiver
- Fill out the Getty Center field trip (on Saturday, June 3) Liability Waiver: Getty Center ART 1A Waiver
FIELD TRIP #1 ON SATURDAY, MAY 13: LACMA AT 12:30PM:
MANDATORY LIABILITY WAIVER: LACMA ART 1A Waiver
Students must submit the liability waiver form, and will not receive free admission to LACMA without it. If you show up to the museum without having done this, you will have to pay full admission and you will not legally be recognized as part of the UCSB Department of Art field trip. LACMA FIELD TRIP:
Important Exhibition that features Nicholas Galanin (his work is the subject of our research paper the quarter):
Conversing in Clay: Ceramics from the LACMA Collection:
One of the earliest and best-preserved areas of artistic production across the globe, ceramics remain a vital field of expression and experimentation into the present. Conversing in Clay: Ceramics from the LACMA Collection explores the medium through 14 case studies, placing historical works in visual dialogue with contemporary examples to illuminate symbolic meanings, technical achievements, and resonances throughout time. The exhibition examines how artists working today relate to international artistic traditions of the medium, both through deliberate references to the past and by engaging with aspects of clay’s materiality that have inspired makers over the centuries. Drawing from LACMA’s wide-ranging collections, the exhibition also highlights many recent contemporary acquisitions, including works by Nicholas Galanin, Steven Young Lee, Courtney Leonard, Roberto Lugo, Mineo Mizuno, Elyse Pignolet, Paul Scott, and more.

Please make sure that you have submitted your University of California, Santa Barbara Waiver of Liability, Assumption of the Risk & Indemnity Agreement to Kio and David in order to attend The Getty Center field trip. Even if you are driving yourself, or coming from LA, you have to submit this form. If you need a ride on one of the two UCSB vans, then talk to your TA (this is a two-way ride to LA and back to SB. If you want to spend the weekend in Los Angeles, you must find your own transportation to The Getty Center).
If you are carpooling (2 or more Art 1A students in a single vehicle), then you are eligible to receive free parking. Once you have submitted your liability waiver to go on the field trip, then you will receive the special Getty issued code for free parking (on the day of the trip). Parking is $15.00 per vehicle if you are not carpooling.
