Artist Bio,
Lyra Purugganan is an interdisciplinary artist based in California. Purugganan graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking from The Ohio State University in 2021. They are pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Influenced by craft and materials, queer culture, and the midwest DIY music scene, Purugganan explores selfhood and their intersecting identities. Through performance, installation, and their drag persona Manyika (Tagalog for doll, dummy), they explore the spectacle that is the Asian femme body in the West through examining the intersection of colonial and family histories. As an emerging artist, Lyra Purugganan has exhibited in group, solo, and duo shows in Columbus, Ohio, featured in Ohio State's online publication The Lantern, and participated in the Columbus Alternative Art Book Fair in 2022. They have participated in group shows at the University of California, Santa Barbara, SCRANCH Project Space, and have been included in the Greater Los Angeles MFA Exhibition in 2023.
